Time Commitment

The Civil Air Patrol cadet program is centered around member participation. In order to get the most out of the program, young people are encouraged to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible. One of the clearest ways to see that a young person is getting the benefits of the cadet program is through regular promotions (approximately every 8 weeks for the first year). If cadets are willing to make the minimum commitments described below, there is no reason why they cannot advance rapidly through the cadet program.

Meeting Attendance Is Required

Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer organization and is managed by volunteer members. If cadets are not committed to attending meetings, they will not have the opportunities to apply the leadership lessons and opportunities.

Weekly Commitment for New Cadets

Every cadet should plan for a time commitment that resembles the following estimates at a minimum:

  • 2.5 hours per week - Attend the squadron meeting
  • 1/2 hour per week - Prepare uniform
  • 1 hour per week - Self-study in the Learn to Lead or Aerospace Dimensions textbooks outside of squadron meeting

Recurring Commitments for New Cadets

Our squadron strives to set aside multiple, interesting and worthwhile activities per month. Our cadets should expect to set aside 4-6 hours per month for weekend activity most months. Examples of weekend activities include:

  • Cadet Orientation Rides
  • Wreaths Across America
  • Cadet Competition
  • Parades
  • Field Trips
  • Emergency Services Exercises
  • CyberPatriot Competition Team
